“Just as I have for the past 15 years, in Congress I will be a fighter for my constituents and a bridge builder to make real positive change to help move people out of poverty and into the middle class.” – Sol Flores
The American Women’s Party is proud to announce our endorsement of Sol Flores for Illinois’ 4th Congressional District. Sol Flores’ parents and grandparents immigrated to Chicago in the 50s and 60s. She was raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to provide for her daughter. Sol Flores always knew she wanted to go into public service and founded La Casa Norte, an organization to help youth and families exit homelessness in the Chicagoland area. She has fought to establish funding for youth homelessness at the city, state, and federal levels. Sol Flores will continue her commitment to public service in Congress.
Sol Flores is a strong supporter of reproductive rights and advocates for Medicaid to cover abortion. She also has a long history of advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ community as part of her work for La Casa Norte. Sol Flores knows that 30-40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ and on the streets due to their families kicking them out. Her advocacy work has also shown Sol Flores how important it is to close loopholes that allow domestic abusers to own guns. She specifically calls for closing the “boyfriend loophole” so an abuser doesn’t need to be married to turn in his guns.
As someone who started working when she was 13 and worked her way through college, Sol Flores knows how important it is to raise the minimum wage and make college more affordable. She advocates strengthening the SBA and CDFI Fund programs that support small businesses as well as encouraging more culturally competent outreach programs to help grow the economy. Sol Flores has created programs to help homeless youth attend college as well as help for homeless families to keep their children in school. She will continue this type of advocacy for her community in Congress.
“I will fight for affordable, quality health care for all. I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform. I will fight to end homelessness, which means ensuring access to affordable health care, affordable housing and a living wage job. I will be a fresh, progressive voice in Congress fighting for the people of the 4th Congressional District.”
– Sol Flores
