The American Women’s Party is proud to endorse Sherry Alu Campagna for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. Sherry Alu Campagna is a Native Hawaiian who was born to a Native Hawaiian advocate mother and a father who worked for the Department of Defense. Campagna is a wetland scientist who cofounded an environmental renewable energy firm. Campagna also has a long history of advocacy and activism. She has been an advocate for racial equality for Native Hawaiians, a foster care system reform advocate, and one of the original Hawaii State Women’s March organizers as the State Chair. Finally, Campagna serves as a commissioner for the Hawaii State Coalition on the Status of Women.
A longtime women’s rights advocate, Sherry Alu Campagna is a strong defender of reproductive rights. In 2017, as a commissioner forthe Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, she successfully lobbied to regulate faith-biased, anti-abortion counseling centers that were masquerading as women’s health clinics. This position has also provided Campagna a platform to fight for equal pay for women, strengthen Title IX legislation, and work toward paid family leave. Campagna supports civil rights for all people and strongly opposes measures that discriminate against LGBTQ people. To fight all kinds of discrimination Campagna supports empowering and ensuring that all people have a voice and a right to vote, including formerly incarcerated people who have served their time.
As an environmental scientist, combating climate change is one of Sherry Alu Campagna’s main priorities. She knows that Hawaii, in particular, is in danger from rising sea levels and fossil fuel dependence. An economically sustainable district will encourage job creation and foster a strong economy in Hawaii. Campagna also supports loan forgiveness for college students and graduate students particularly for those who work in public interest after school.
